India is going to launch the Digital Health Framework under National Digital Health Mission (NDHM). This framework essentially be built around public databases on medical records with open APIs that can be connected to fetch and push information.

The two primary principles on which the NDHM infrastructure is based are:

(a) open health networks and

(b) consent.

Any hospital, healthcare or health practitioner can connect to these networks and access medical records based on patient consent.

Once this framework goes online, players in the healthcare infrastructure will need to upgrade their systems to leverage this national integrated network.

The cloud-native HIMS or health information management system designed by me is designed to take advantage of the network to help healthcare players leapfrog in their digitization journey.

  • We engaged with 13 hospitals and took interviews of more than 50 patients, 20 doctors and coordinated across 3 government departments to understand the present infrastructure.

  • Next we created a complete data flow structure and user journey roadmap and iterated with these stakeholders to freeze it.

  • We designed the complete front end of the solution and created mockups mapping with the target audience.

  • Finally, taking Open MRS as a base platform, we created the HIMS as a layer on top.
